As standards in roofing continue to evolve every day, Russell Roof Tiles is advising contractors and developers to get the best advice possible before starting re-roofing projects.
The roof tile manufacturer says it has seen roofing requirements change dramatically over the past 50 years and works closely with its customers and local authorities to ensure they are aware of the necessary requirements on roofing projects.
However, Russell Roof Tiles says it is conscious that many contractors and developers undertaking re-roofing projects may not be aware of the advice available to them. Whilst manufacturers have expert technical teams on hand to offer support and help, Russell Roof Tiles says customers don’t always utilise this to their best advantage. This means often re-roofing projects are carried out before new legislation or requirements have been taken into consideration and this can ultimately lead to a shorter lifespan for the roof or even damage beyond repair to the roof.
The manufacturer says one example of legislation that should be followed at all times is BS 5534, the Code of Practice for Slating and Tiling. First introduced in 1978, the code has seen many changes over the past few years including a sharp shift towards the importance of dry fix systems on roofs – something which an older roof may not currently have in place. Russell Roof Tiles says dry fix is a more reliable and effective roof fixing solution and provides excellent waterproof resistance, guaranteeing a sustainable roof long term.
In addition, providing an energy-efficient and long-lasting roof at a time when the UK is undergoing its largest housing crisis is just as important. The Government’s 2008 Climate Change Act plans to cut carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 and therefore, the team at Russell Roof Tiles say contractors and developers need to consider insulation as well as the impact that this act could have in the future for re-roofing.
Mark Parsons, Technical Director at Russell Roof Tiles, said: “Weather patterns, legislation and energy efficient requirements are changing and evolving all the time, and as roof tile manufacturers it is our role to stay ahead of these changes and advise our customers on the best course of action for re-roofing projects.”
One of Russell’s most recent re-roofing projects saw the team work closely with Ashfield District Council to supply its Highland roof tiles in cottage red, as part of a £30m five-year housing scheme. Russells was able to provide the necessary advice to ensure that all legislation was met and the tiles and accessories ensured consistency and longevity for the tenant, whilst minimising future life time costs of the roof once installed.
Mark added: “While the Ashfield District Council project was a great success, not everyone is aware that they also have access to this type of advice. It is important to know that anything from the weight of the tile to choosing the right sustainable accessories need to be taken into consideration before modifying any roof structure.
“We always recommend speaking to a roofing expert as they will be able to advise on any regulations that need to be adhered to. By doing so, this will see less problems further down the line and as legislation continues to evolve, this will become more important than ever for re-roofing projects.”
