Building confidence in insulation products through BBA Certification

Third-party certification, like that provided by the British Board of Agrément (BBA), instils confidence in construction products, including several variants of Ravatherm XPS X insulation boards manufactured by Ravago Building Solutions. These schemes go beyond mere compliance, guaranteeing that products will adhere to recognised standards of safety, quality, and performance if used according to the manufacturer’s directions.

“Vigilance and curiosity are essential to avoid catastrophic oversights, as history has shown, and this is aided by third party certification schemes that reinforce transparency and accountability”

They support a culture of curiosity, building confidence in an industry that remains in the spotlight in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster where that ‘deliberate incuriosity’ was partly at fault. Building occupiers will rightly never again take claims of safety and quality at face value, and neither can we. Vigilance and curiosity are essential to avoid catastrophic oversights, as history has shown, and this is aided by third party certification schemes that reinforce transparency and accountability.

UKAS Accredited
Not all third-party certifications are created equal, and the BBA is the only UKAS accredited provider of certification for construction products. While accreditation is not a legal requirement, UKAS is the government appointed body that ensures third-party certification bodies and their assessors meet internationally recognised standards of technical competence, including compliance with the ISO 17021 standard for conformity assessment.

“From thermal performance to durability and fire behaviour, insulation products are required to undergo thorough evaluation to ensure reliability”

Consistency and Product Testing
BBA certification emphasises consistency and rigorous product testing. From thermal performance to durability and fire behaviour, insulation products are required to undergo thorough evaluation to ensure reliability. This testing regimen validates product performance and underscores the importance of maintaining high standards throughout manufacturing.

The BBA conducts six-monthly audits of Ravago Building Solutions’ UK manufacturing facility as part of its Factory Production Control efforts, ensuring that our processes, quality plans and materials remain fit for purpose.

Approved Standard Methodologies
In the case of insulation products, accredited third-party certification ensures that U-value calculations are made according to the correct and safest methodology set out in the relevant standards. For example, the BBA Agrément certificate for an inverted roof system using Ravatherm XPS X 300 SL (in conjunction with the Ravatherm MK water flow reducing layer) specifies the methodology laid out in BS EN ISO 6946:2017 and BRE Report BR 443:2019, using the design lambda value (whereby a moisture correction factor is applied to the declared value) and the fx drainage correction for the system.

Ultimately, a BBA certificate provides you with the assurance that a product will perform as expected provided you follow a manufacturer’s instructions for a given application. You can find BBA certificates for Ravatherm XPS X products in the download section of the Ravago Building Solutions website.
