Darren McGhee, a third-generation roofer from North Lanarkshire, is celebrating after being crowned Britain’s Top Tradesperson 2019 at the annual Screwfix Live trade show.
Darren received the award from Screwfix CEO John Mewett, while surrounded by fellow tradespeople in a packed out Farnborough Exhibition Centre. As part of his prize, Darren will receive £10,000 worth of tools, a £5,000 tech bundle and £5,000 towards future training.
Caroline Welsh, Director of Brand and Marketing at Screwfix, says: “Every year the judges and I are blown away by our tradespeople’s stories. When Darren came in to the room his passion and commitment to his industry was contagious, but his customer care was outstanding.
“When he showed us his innovative MyRoofCare package we knew he was about to change the roofing industry. This first of its kind product means that for a small monthly fee, homeowners can now have roof protection cover and no nasty surprises. Darren also went on to share how he trains his colleagues to ensure every customer gets the DMG Roofing experience.”
Darren says: “I am absolutely delighted to win this competition! Just making it to the final was a massive achievement so to win is amazing. The prize will be hugely valuable in helping me to continue to grow MyRoofCare and help raise standards in the roofing industry. I want to thank Screwfix and the other judges for this great opportunity.”
Now in its tenth year of the competition, Britain’s Top Tradesperson received more than 1,000 entrants. During the final, Darren and nine other finalists faced a panel of industry-leading judges including representatives from the NICEIC, CIPHE and FMB.
