by Jennie Ward

Brian G Newell has been recognised in the New Year’s Honours list, and stated: “I see this as recognition of the hard work of the whole Shackerley team, alongside my own focus on driving quality standards and performance in the cladding sector.”

Brian G Newell, the Chief Executive and founder of cladding manufacturer Shackerley, has been awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list to recognise his services to the ceramics industry.

Having begun his career as a tiling apprentice, Mr Newell combined technical knowledge and an entrepreneurial approach to business to establish Shackerley in 1983. The company has since grown to become one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of ventilated façade systems, with two ISO 9001 accredited Lancashire factories, and a broad portfolio of award-winning projects.

A company known for innovation, technical expertise and exceptional quality, Shackerley already has two Queen’s Awards, including one for the development of the company’s SureClad rainscreen cladding system. The company’s portfolio includes SureClad Ceramic Granite, Engineered Stone, Natural Stone and Terracotta façade systems, along with the BrickClad brick cladding system. All Shackerley systems are designed and manufactured in-house by the company in the UK.

Brian G Newell’s MBE not only recognises his contribution to UK manufacturing and innovation as the pioneering force behind Shackerley; it also rewards his contribution to raising standards and championing innovation in the construction industry. He has played an important role in the development of the UK ceramics industry, advising on multiple British Standards Institute (BSI) committees that develop and establish codes of practice and industry standards. He has been instrumental in the development of British, EN and ISO standards, is a UK delegation leader to the International Organisation for Standardisation, and was recognised for his contribution with a BSI International Standards Maker award in 2014.

A founder member of The Tile Association (TTA) and currently Chairman of TTA Technical Committee, Mr Newell also won an award for his outstanding contribution to the tile industry and has been recognised for his achievements as both a Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers.

“After so many decades in the construction sector, I am still passionate about what I do and proud that Shackerley has set the standard for quality, safety and innovation in the cladding sector,” Mr Newell commented. “We are a UK business with an international reach, continuing to invest in product development and our manufacturing capabilities at our ISO 9001 accredited factories, while supplying projects and working with architects of national and international renown.

“I am so delighted to have been recognised with an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list and see this as recognition of the hard work of the whole Shackerley team, alongside my own focus on driving quality standards and performance in the cladding sector.”Mr Newell will receive his MBE at Buckingham Palace on a date to be confirmed.”
